When compared to the size of the universe, human beings are infinite times smaller, equivalent to dust on this planet. From the time we were born to the end of our life, time flies so fast just like a small boat on a creek that flows downhill eventually to the ocean. In this relatively short duration of human life in comparison to the existence of the Earth, people have tried so hard to understand this world with their emotions and; therefore, to prove their existence. In addition to the above-mentioned concept, my works present the struggle of lives, scars, loss, search, discouragement, and bravery.
“人” with two simple strokes in Chinese represents an individual human with high intelligence and complex emotion and behavior when compared to Chinese characters for different creatures such as “狗”(dog), “魚”(bird), “鹿”(deer). It makes people incomprehensible why the character “人” is so simple and concise. However, writing it in Chinese calligraphy is not that easy. This situation implies how we usually think it is not that difficult to live our lives in a society. We tend to spend our whole lives searching for the meaning of whom we are and learning how to be normal human beings. In this painting, “人” is rotated upside down as a symbol to represent the shape of a bird. The bird tries to hover at an altitude under an uncertain environment. This depicts the struggles and perplexities inevitable in our life.
I put this “bird symbol” on my painting— only one bird in a foggy landscape—which could represent you or me, and him or her around us. This bird symbol represents the inevitable loneliness of our life. No matter how many friends we have, we always need to face every challenge ourselves. That’s the proof of our existence.
The fog, mist, water vapor, light, shadow, and wind are important elements in my artwork. These flowing elements tell us how the world can be changeable. The future is blurred and unpredictable, just like a landscape in the mist. Every step is the exploration of the unknown future and will always have surprises at the next corner. I use lots of blue and purple tones to build a mystery and dreamy world. I also combine the eastern art concept, of “Rhythmic Vitality” into my artwork, discussing the philosophy of our life.
